Who is Rodney?
Jan.7, 2000Dear David,You don't have a thing about rats do you?

I agree generally with Jim's comments. If you didn't like St. Lucia you are in for a real shock on some of the other, poorer islands. Compared to them St. Lucia is a bastion of peace and civility when the local rasta sect isn't busy butchering nuns and burning churches as happened here last week, that is. And that's nothing compared to the filth, crime and violence we encountered in Central and South America, which are virtually lawless in our opinion. The only reason there isn't more crime in the latin countries is because not everybody is inclined to commit crime. You want to see real lawlessness try Costa Rica sometime. But I'm starting to rant (again).I like St. Lucia fine, but then I like to get out and meet the people of the island. I feel far safer here than I ever did in Buffalo, Detroit, Boston, L.A., or San Diego to name but a few. I have never been one for the all inclusive resort experience simply because it is too insular. I did it once and hated it. You are effectively a prisoner of the economics of the vacation that keeps you at the resort most of the time. You don't get a chance to interact with the local folks in any meaningful way. If that's the life you want why leave home at all? We try to keep in mind the second law of successful travel, and that is to remember that the reason we travel to strange and exotic lands is to find things that are strange and exotic, so if it turns out that things aren't the same as they are at home, we don't complain because that is why we travel in the first place. Here we have gotten to know some people and do some volunteer work. She is also working on a project to get books for the local library for example, and I'm writing a proposal to help improve the local marina and have been on local talk TV to discuss immigration issues. We find that by getting involved in the communities we visit we get a much better appreciation for them and their problems and concerns. After having lived on the hook for three years She Who Must Be Obeyed felt in need of a shore break so we are basing ourselves here for a year or two and taking the opportunity to replenish the cruising kitty.
