Rodney, I am wondering how you like St. Lucia? i have only been to one Carribean island on vacation and it was St. Lucia. I found the island to be a real mess and I was hit with culture shock. The resort we stayed at (Club St. Lucia) on the north end of the island was ok but during our stay our room was broken into, and watching rats stare at us through the fence while we were eating was a bit unnerving. The snorkelling was fantastic and I took up scuba diving when I returned (currently a PADI advanced open water diver). We also had the opportunity to go sailing on about a 40 foot ketch rigged trimaran which took us about half way to martinique. It was an awesome ride with dolphins swimming in the bow wave. The resort was all inclusive with Heinekin always on tap and with good tips the bartenders would upgrade from the bottom shelf for mixed drinks. Are you just visiting, living there, or other? best regards, d

Suggest you charter

I've been to the Caribbean about a half a dozen times. We chose to charter by ourselves so that we may see a variety of ports without having to move luggage, etc., and enjoying the sailing. In the half a dozen times that I've been there, the 12 accomodations that I stayed at (beore and after sailing) have been clean and quite acceptable. Had ant like cockroaches at one location, but the room was immediately cleaned and sprayed when I mentioned it to the front desk. For choices: BVIs for easy sailing and mooring at night; Grenada-St. Vincents for beauty, snorkeling, and the sailing. St. Martin for the food and beaches. Martinique for the French flavor, well kept high speed roads (speaking French makes it easier. Mustique for the rich a famous, and St. Lucia for the volcano . . . . Jim

Who is Rodney?

Jan.7, 2000 Dear David, You don't have a thing about rats do you?:) I agree generally with Jim's comments. If you didn't like St. Lucia you are in for a real shock on some of the other, poorer islands. Compared to them St. Lucia is a bastion of peace and civility when the local rasta sect isn't busy butchering nuns and burning churches as happened here last week, that is. And that's nothing compared to the filth, crime and violence we encountered in Central and South America, which are virtually lawless in our opinion. The only reason there isn't more crime in the latin countries is because not everybody is inclined to commit crime. You want to see real lawlessness try Costa Rica sometime. But I'm starting to rant (again). I like St. Lucia fine, but then I like to get out and meet the people of the island. I feel far safer here than I ever did in Buffalo, Detroit, Boston, L.A., or San Diego to name but a few. I have never been one for the all inclusive resort experience simply because it is too insular. I did it once and hated it. You are effectively a prisoner of the economics of the vacation that keeps you at the resort most of the time. You don't get a chance to interact with the local folks in any meaningful way. If that's the life you want why leave home at all? We try to keep in mind the second law of successful travel, and that is to remember that the reason we travel to strange and exotic lands is to find things that are strange and exotic, so if it turns out that things aren't the same as they are at home, we don't complain because that is why we travel in the first place. Here we have gotten to know some people and do some volunteer work. She is also working on a project to get books for the local library for example, and I'm writing a proposal to help improve the local marina and have been on local talk TV to discuss immigration issues. We find that by getting involved in the communities we visit we get a much better appreciation for them and their problems and concerns. After having lived on the hook for three years She Who Must Be Obeyed felt in need of a shore break so we are basing ourselves here for a year or two and taking the opportunity to replenish the cruising kitty.
