our ST 7000+ raymarine autohelm control head gives a current limit error and goes to standby. It has only happend so far on initial start up. with in 10 mimutes it responds again to auto pilot and performs fine for rest of passage. Doesnt seem to involve load because it tracks in heavy wind and wave but acts up on initial request leaving anchorage. some times requires 4 or five attempts before staying engaged? Its a 2002 model on our passage 456. Seems like a mech failure would not act up under no load and not want to stick in flat water no waves etc.

Not sure of the reason for your problem. First reaction might be power issue to the seatalk network. The system is taking time to power the network. Guess is why you are getting a current limit error. This could be corrosion on a connection. That is just a first response and if it is not a factor then you have some electrical testing to do.

This might help... https://jeanneau-owners.com/hintsandtips/RaymarineST6000/ST60007000servicemanual.pdf

Its the computer drying. It is afterall 20 years old and mine did the same type of things before giving up. It took a year after, but it died, just totally dead, one day. Of course you are going to have seatalk issue you need to plan around for the control head when it goes (I found an older unit to match the old ST when I did mine)

I had a similar issue on our H410 last summer. It was corrosion. Every ground, seatalk plug, and power lead I ended up cleaning with CRC Contact spray cleaner, a wire brush, followed up with dielectric grease. It fixed all the problems and seems to have given me a season or two more of borrowed time. The power lead to the computer and its ground are a good place to start.

Eventually though I will need to replace the computer like Don Lucas did, as well as figure out the control head replacement that will work best as they are a different size/shape now from what I have. I am content to wait another season or two though if possible on this one as I have more pressing upgrades.

Thanks.. Yea I'm hoping that's it..but I understand we've gotten 19 years of flawless service..just hoping to get back to states this summer and either get it serviced or find a good used replacement we have sailed 16 thousand miles last 9 years doubt we will sail another 9 so starting fresh will be the next owners task
