I purchased a 98 Hunter 310, which has the ST-50 Wind and VMG. I have never had a VMG instrument before. I read the user manual and researched your web site for information on the use of this gauge. But did not find anything of help. Could you explain how this gauge works and how the data is used during sailing. Thanks!

Component of Speed Vector

The VMG to Windward is the component of your speed vector that is into the wind. For example, if you are sailing 45 degrees off the wind, then your VMG is cos 45 x Boat Speed= VMG. Our manuals do not have any basic navigation calculations. There are many seamanship and basic navigation texts available at your local marine chandler's.
