ST 4000 Auto Pilot

I have just completed the diagnostics on my ST4000 autopilot with RayMarine

It seems my control head (display) is broken

I said "okay, I will just buy a new one."

They replied, "they don't have any."

Then I asked, "will a 5000 work?" they said "yes."

I said okay "I'll buy one of those." They said, "they don't have any."

You can see where this is going.

Looks like I will be sending mine in for repair, but they were not too certain it would be repairable

Anyone know where I can get a working 40000 or 5000 control head?

Not to be "embracing the horror" but...

Have you taken the unit apart? Nothing to loose at this point. Given that electronics don't generally go bad but the connections do it may be a simple job of disconnect everything that has a connection, check for "burnt" and corroded circuit board components and de-laminated circuit board traces.

Also check ALL your external wiring connections. From sensors to unit.

It is my experience that 99.44% of all electrical problems on boats are corroded connections.

Try E-BAY every once in a while I go on e-bay looking and pretty sure I saw a auto head for sale.
Maybe this would be a good time to upgrade to a S1 auto which I also see on E-bay,maybe you can get the S1 without buying the wheel motor,just a thought.
Yes check the wiring conections but I think raymarine already must have ruled that out.

The 4000 has been discontinued and I doubt if they can fix it for you. The 5000 will require a rudder position sensor which you may not have. The Raymarine S-1 is being liquidated through online vendors for about $750 complete with flux compass, wheel motor, control box and rudder position sensor. Control head for the ST 4000 can be found, but new they are selling for close to $500. For another $250 you can have everything brand new.
