I'm geting ready to install an SSB radio and am curious how/where others have installed antenna (as there is no backstay). Any thoughts and/or experience are appreciated.
I have a friend who used a 3 element yagi beam hoisted up his mast. He could not sail that way but he had a great signal on 20 meters. There are a lot of ideas on this topic. Check the archives. Manufacturers web sites like SGC have some useful info. You could insulate a shroud and load that up or you could use a wire for a section of your topping lift and / or a wire lazy jack element. I have heard of putting the tuner at the top of the mast and loading up a couple of shrouds or topping lift or backstay as an inverted vee. There are vertical antennas and there are some really interesting tuned loop antennas. Look at the ARRL site or visit a ham radio store for books or local advice.
Tom,I'm planning on the installation of an ICOM M-706 and plan to install an Outbacker antenna so I don't have to worry about counterpoise or the lack of a backstay.http://www.web-counting.com/cgi-bin/outbacker/OBPP.html-David
