We have a 2011 Hunter 39 twin helm and the starboard wheel squeaks when we are underway and steering from the port position. DOes anyone have experience with this situation and a solution / cure for the squeak?

Thanks

We had a similar problem with our 2010 H39. Initially I thought it was related to the rubber seal behind the wheel, but eventually traced it to the cable where it runs through the pulley at the base of the pedestal - the cable turns 90 degrees here and runs to the rudder quadrant. The pulleys are easily accessed from the rear cabin by removing the overhead panel just in front of the rear bulkhead and I now lubricate them at least annually using a silicon based lubricant.

Thanks for the info. I was assuming the noise was from the seal around the shaft behind the wheel but I'll look at the cable run as well.

Just a suggestion also to go to the steering system manufacturer's website for overall lubrication and maintenance instructions of all the components in the steering chain. For instance, if the "cable" you are referring to is wire rope, then the wire as well is likely to be on the list of lubrication items. The individual strands in the wire rope rub against each other with friction as they bend around the sheaves and quadrant. With time, the friction causes the strands to break and fray. Lubrication along the entire length of the wire will greatly extend the life. Also the instructions should specify the recommended lubrication type for each item. Just a thought.
