Howdy I have a '85 Hunter 22 with an annoyingly squeaky boom. It only makes noise in light air when the boat is not really powered up. The noise is not coming from the gooseneck, but from within the boom itself. I have sprayed the entire track where the sail attaches with sailube and it had no effect on the noise. My boom is the stock (I believe) Kenyon boom. Please help me, the only thing more annoying than the squeak is my wifes whining about it when we go out in light air. Thanks, Shawn

Outhaul tackle?

I'm just guessing, but if your boom is like mine (88 H23) it may be the outhaul tackle. If your outhaul is a dacron line at the gooseneck and a wire at the end of the boom then the dacron line goes out along the boom, over a sheave about 3/4 of the way out and then back to a fixed point near the gooseneck. The wire is somehow fastened to the axle of the sheave, goes over a second sheave at the end of the boom and then ends at a shackle which fastens to the clew of the sail. In normal to heavy air, the outhaul is tensioned for proper sail shape, so the tackle is tight and there is no movement. However, in light air, the outhaul should be loose for more power, so the rtackle is slack and sheave can rotate back and forth a few degrees on its axle as the boat rocks...hence the squeak. Lubricating the axle should fix the noise, but since I've never had this problem myself, I can't tell you how to get at it. Hey, I'm just guessing, OK?!!! Good luck (I hope I'm right).
