Close the raw water intake
1. Close the raw water intake valve. Because as you crank, the engine and exhaust take in water. If for any reason it takes several cranks to get it started, the engine will fill up with water that has to be drained. So keep the valve closed, and when you get ignition, pop down to the shaft and open up the valve.2. Make sure you've got 12 volts in your battery to crank. As a precaution, remain tethered to AC to ensure you have enough juice to start. 3. Look for water going out the stern, which guarantees you've got raw water cooling proceeding nicely. 4. Don't worry. These are very reliable engines.
