Is the Spindrift Day Sailer 17 the same as the O'Day Day Sailer 17?

Yes, and no.
YES, the Spindrift built Day Sailer is the same, Class-Legal boat as the O'DAY built Day Sailer I.
NO, the boat is not "the same" as the O'DAY built DAY SAILER I in that very few parts are interchangeable, Spindrift used new molds made from from the same basic design as O'DAY used, but with several design differences that do not affect the Class racing (or casual daysailing) use of the boats. The rigging layouts are different (but then O'DAY also made changes during their 1958-1976 production of the DS I), Sails WILL be the same, hulls are same and basic decks are similar, Centerboard shape and rudder blade are same to meet DSA Class specs.

They will basically sail equally well, and the basics of sailing one will be same as the other, but how the boats are setup will be slightly different, so that an instruction manual for the O'DAY-Built DS I will not be completely accurate for rigging the Rebel/Spindrift/Precision built boats and vice-versa.
Both builders built very good DAY SAILERs, both have their good and bad points.
