Does anybody know if by having only one spreader on the total length of mast creates a problem or not? Has anybody added an extra one?

Short heavy mast, keel-stepped, . . .

and rigged to the masthead. Not sure why you think that would be underengineered. A lot of H37Cs have crossed both oceans. I have never heard of a mast failure. We do use the running stays for downwind work. It has been discussed that the upper shrouds do not line up with the chainplates. That the loading is misaligned. I know two owners who had bigger chainplates made and installed them in alignment. I do not believe they had problems. They are just anal. :)

Thanks

Thanks Ed for responding... I guess I was a bit concerned because of a small kink in the mast just above the spreaders, dont know why that happened? Maybe someone before when running with rhe cutter didn't use the running backstay?

MAST FAILURES

I know of two mast failures on 37c models. Blaise Pearson had one on his and replaced the rig with a double spreader setup and rod rigging i think, he also increased the size of the rigging and added some upper shrouds. I have not seen it but he has lots of info on 37c for ocean passages. Dennis Velenga has also replaced his mast but im not sure what they installed. both boats are now rigged as sloops not cutters. For racing arround the marks the cutter is a pain in the stern!

Small Kink?

Regardless of past experience, I would take good pictures of the kink, and get into a detailed discussion with a mast maker. Selden comes to mind (I forget the other supplier for the 37c at the moment.) Even the smallest defect resulting from stress on the mast is the beginning to failure for the whole structure. Or the "kink" mave have another, more benign source. But I would escalate to a real expert right away. David Lady Lillie
