Where the spreaders fasten on the mast, they appear tobe strained and about to bend back. Should they be perpendicular to the mast?

Bob...

I see your rear stay going off to the upper right of your photo. What is the line going to the left? Is it an uphaul for the boom? If so, how do you like it? Chris M25 Chara

Yup

The line running aft on the port side of the pic is my topping lift. When at anchor and not using the boom as a ridge pole for my shade tarp, I hang the boom off to the side supported by the topping lift to allow more cockpit headroom. That is about the only time I use it. When raising, lowering or reefing the main I hook the boom onto a short (6") lead attached to the backstay which not only holds it up, but keeps it centered (and the boat headed into the wind).

Thanks...

Thanks Bob. I thought that is what it was, even thought I had the wrong name. I don't have one but have often thought of installing one for the reasons you stated. I usually just leave the boom hooked to the short lead on my back stay and put up with the lack of head room. Although, my home made lazy jacks do hold it up some if I put it to the side of the boat. Thanks again. Chris M25 Chara
