Spreaders for a Venture 21?

This is probably a silly question, but I recently purchased a 1971 Venture 21, without spreaders on the mast. Is this normal, or am I missing some important hardware? I figured that the mast was fairly short, so it must not need them, but now I am thinking twice. I'd aprecitate any help I can get!-Joshjwhitman@adelphia.net

Spreaders on Venture 21

I once time-shared a Venture 21 without spreaders, but I saw another 21 with spreaders, so apparently they came both ways. On my boat in very heavy winds (>20 knots) the mast would start to bend very badly. Careful tuning of the shroud tension seemed to help, but I recommend that if you ever go out in heavy winds, go with a small jib and double-reef the main.
