I have recently purchased a 1984 Hunter 27 and have started getting her ready for the water. The previous owner, or his boatyard had removed the spreaders from the mast while it's been in storage. I noticed that the outboard ends of the spreader have black plastic inserts. They have a groove for the shroud/stays and two holes running vertically thru the inserts. I am assuming that there are some kind of fitting that goes onto these inserts to keep the shrouds/stays in place on the end of the spreader. There has always been something mechanical in nature on the ends of spreaders of my previous boats. When I asked the owner where these 'pieces' were, he said that he always taped the shrouds in place and then taped the protective rubber boots over them. Can anyone tell me if there is in fact a proper piece that should be on the end of the spreader, and if so, what are they called and where can I get them??

How mine are

All mine ever had was stainless steel safety wire going through the vertical holes, around the shrouds and back to the holes where they were aircraft twisted and the ends put into the holes so that no sharp ends protruded. My spreader boots went over this and were pull tied onto the spreaders and shrouds. I have never seen any mechinical pieces on this model Hunter spreaders. Hope this helps
