I have a 1980 33' Hunter that I'm working on. The mast has been stepped off and noticed that one of the spreaders is bent(just alittle). Can this be fixed or do I have to buy another one or can it go back like it is? Thanks for any help.

No, it can't go back like it is. Can it be straightened? depends. How about a picture? It's real hard to try give advice without seeing the subject.

I think that I would straighten it and then reinforce it. But first I would call Rig-Rite and get the price for a new one just in case they are giving them away. Then I think you will go back to step one. Another thought, you have seen Jorge(jorgefife) mention many times that he has access to a salvage yard. Maybe he can locate one for you.

In my humble opinion, I'd replace them. The bends look concentrated in the area that fits into a bracket and for that short of length, would take quite a bit to try and straighten. Nothing good can come from a sudden spreader failure and spreaders are not terribly expensive. I had to replace one on our H280 and it seems as though it was about $75 for a 48" teardrop-shaped extrusion. You may be able to reuse the tips.

After seeing the pics I'm with Clark on this one. BTW, it appears that both spreaders are bent. I'm wondering what caused this bend in the first place? Have you had someone knowledgeable look at it?

RE: Spreaders

I agree with Alan--both spreaders appear to have a bend near the mast ends, one moreso than the other. I suspect your outer shoud rigging may have snagged something while the boat had some forward motion on.

Since both have a bend, I'd also look up the mainsail track to see if there may have been a twist put into the mast by whatever caused the spreader bends.

The spreaders were bent when I got the boat. I'm not really sure what happened. The boat was abandoned at a boatyard and I got her. Thanks for the advice, ya'll are right about replacing them and I just feel better ask people who know more than me. Thanks again.
