Has anyone had problems with Exhaust Mixer (spray riser) leaking on their Yanmar 3jhte? My new (used) '98 376 has 150 hrs on it and the riser has been leaking for a while. The seller is paying for the repair, but is this a common maint item? Or perhaps a problem never corrected from the beginning?

Mixing Elbow.

Bob: The mixing elbow is a maintenance item. Similar to a raw water impeller. They should be inspected every couple of years. I think the normal life is about 5 years. The elbow mixes the exhaust gas and raw water. This becomes a corrosive mixture. Most of the time the owners only know there is something wrong because the elbow clogs up from 'coking'. This is usually caused from running your engine at low RPM's for prolonged periods of time. Yanmar recommeds you run your engine at 70-80% of the max rated RPM's (usually about 2500-3000).
