Has anyone split the backstay on a Mac 25, as to create one on each side of the stern? I'm installing a pedestal helm with a 30'' wheel, and the helmsmans seat puts me up agains the current backstay. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.

A helm?

I have a 25, and I have thought about doing this very thing. How much is this going to cost you to do all of it? I hate the tiller, and would love to have a helm. Are you doing the work installing it, or are you having it done? Can you tell me how much the end result is? I would love to do that.

Steering Mod

Hey Gregg, I'm installing the system myself. The entire system of mostly used parts is about $1000 (The wheel is 200, and the used pedastal is 250. I've been measuring and re-measuring the space under the cockpit to configure all parts. I'm adding a support plate under the cockpit and up the inside of the transom to support the new chain/sproket/rod system. I'm replacing the rudder housing with a post version I found at Minnie's. Rather than try to find matching shafts and gears, I'm welding them together. I have some welding and epoxy work still to do. The last challenge I face is to configure the rudder blade to the new system. I didn't like the old aluminum rudder housing. It was eaten away badly from combined metals. The new system should be much tougher than the old. And since I only sail in deep water, I'm not as concerned about hitting the rudder as I am having a sturdy one.. ;) When complete, I'll post some pics. By the way, do you sail year-round up there? Hows the bay in the winter?

The Bay

I would love to see all the Mod Pics. I really want to do this, and my wife would really like it as well. As for the bay.... It can be really nasty in the winter. Cold, windy, and wet. I don't do much winter sailing anymore. I used to when I was part of a crew, but now that I have my own boat.... I am happier warm, and dry. I am mostly in the Lakes like Tahoe, and Clear Lake, But I have gone out in Tomalas. Send me some in-progress pics if you can. Thanks,

I have most of the parts and calculations now. I will start the installation after the holiday. The holiday and my other hobby (Pharma CEO)interfere with the boat project on occasion.. ;) When complete, I will certainly post pics for all that are interested.

I have split my backstay. Shortened the stock backstay and attached the stock mainsheet by looping it behind my stern pulpit. This technically gives you an adjustable backstay (which I have never adjusted). Moved my mainsheet to the entrance of the cabin. Upside is that you get more cockpit room with out the sheets getting in the way. Downside is that I have not got figured out how to keep the sun off. Limits putting up overhead cover.
