Splicing / Whipping

Last night, I started splicing shackles to the boats running rigging. First try looks good, but what do others use? For my spin downhaul, I spliced the shackle, added a crown sinnet to the shackle, then common whipping at both ends.

I like the splice, but want for something more on the whipping. The crown sinnet also turned out great (finished with wallknot) but may be a bit "chunky"

What do YOU have for pull "tabs"?
Anyone know of good resource for other whipping techniques?

Are you talking about an eye splice? For whipping anything I use "whipping twine". For an end whip I seal the line with a hot knife and whip the end with twine for about an inch. Never had one fray. For the eye splice I sometimes whip the area just below the yoke. I've also seen people use the little balls the keep the shacke and splice from getting jammed up in the sheave box...but I have no opinion on those.

Whippping, yes. But I haven't used a spice on a halyard in years. Buntline hitch. when the part that rides the sheave wears, cut off six inches and retie.

Lately I've been building "luggage tag" eye slices for my amsteel cored, tapered halyards.... The splice will maintain 90 to 95% of the line's strength compared to the 50% of a knot. The advantage is the long loop allows you to bend on or remove the shackle with absolutely no damage to the cord.

The buntline hitch is a fine knot...... I use it for my jib downhaul and a few other applications where you don't want your hardware to shake loose.
