I have a couple of 12v DC Bora fans that I'm trying to install in the forward berth. I do not want to run dedicated line to fans so am trying to tie in to existing 12v DC lines in the area. There is a 12v DC CO monitor in berth with easy access and figured tying into it. The amperage rating for the CO monitor wiring is much higher than the fan. 1) can this be done with clean splice? 2) should I run an in-line fuse for the fan since higher amp rating on CO monitor? Any input would be appreciated.

Creola,

I changed all the interior lighting to LED bulbs. Since the LED bulbs draw a lot less power, the wiring that supplies the light fixtures can then also carry the load for fans. If you have lighting wiring close by where you want to mount the fans, this could be an option for you.

That is what I did splicing into the light fixture wiring for many years now.

Pretty sure we are talking less than 2 amps unless the fan is really large. 2 amps is not going to fry any wiring since you have to have at least 16 gauge. the exception being wires bundled in a sheath but those are usually signal carring and not power.

I have changed all the interior fixtures to LCD and wired the fans into the same source. What I notice is that the light will dim some when the fan is turned on. I think that is typical of a DC system. This only happens in the V-berth which is furthest from the electrical panel. (Our travel trailer does the same thing & it is all factory wiring)

Thanks for everyone's input. Sounds like lighting wiring should work fine. Have not swapped out old lighting for LED, however. May add that to the list soon.
Again, thanks for input.
