I am splicing two ends of a 7/16" Sta set rope for my main Halyard Hunter 34, can somebody tell experiences on their experience if the strenght once spliced will be highly diminished , or if is ok to use it for a while with little risk of failure

I splice all of my rope for myself and do not have any problems with it. I bought a fid kit and it has instructions but I use a book called the marlinspike sailor. The instructions out of the book are much easier to understand than the ones that came with the fid kit. I would say a splice is alot stronger than a knot that stands a chance of coming undone....Tim Welsh H34 AKA Cabo Wabo

Are you sure....

...you want to use Sta-Set as a halyard. This line works well as a control line or sheet, but is a poor choice for any halyard. Adding a splice in the middle of it will only make matters worse. the added thickness will increase friction.

Clarification, Please, Rigoletito

Are you splicing two ropes together to use as a halyard? If so, the splice will reduce the strength. It will be OK if it is tied off in front of the splice when the sail is up. If you are asking if a splice for the shackle is OK, it is fine. PS: I have about 70' of 7/8 Sta-set in good condition I will send you if shipping to Mexico is not too expensive. Reply if you want it. Rick Dinon
