Anyone interested in a neat system for starting your outboards that are not equiped with an electric starter, can see pics of Northerns spinstart system on the trailer sailor link to this site! It sure makes starting the outboard a hell of a lot easier then pulling on a starter rope!

I don't get what is so hard about pulling a rope start. I have a Honda 8 hp. I give is a pull and get going.

Spin start

There are two models of spin start and you have to go to the Northern site, and in their catalog they sell them. One model does use a spring, but the model I have does not. My system you just put a cup on the top end of the crankshaft, torqued down, and then another mating piece in your drill. Just type in NorthernTool.com and then spinstart. The models will come up. I put pics of the system on trailer sailor, so you could see how it works. From what I can see the spinstart system can be adapted to all models of outboards, as well as lawnmowers, both riding and pushing! It is easy!

As to pulling the rope.

Due to the location of the engine on my sailboat, down on the engine mount, it makes it difficult to reach for starting. This solved the problem.

18 volt

My 18 volt can start the engine, but I would smell the brushes after I used it! So I moved up to a 24 Volt and there is absolutly no problem for the cordless drill! I use a 24 volt B and D Firestorm drill! Hey that is funny a B and S engine and a B and D drill. Oh well! Anyway I selected the spin start without a spring, as I wanted the simplest of the set ups. Springs can wear out after awhile, so with the other set up, there isnt any to worry about! Basically just three parts and one is the cover set just below the cup! The other is the cup and then the part in the drill. Three simple parts that do the job really good! And yes those links to Northern show the two types!
