Bob

I just got done reading the latest Spinsheet magazine. I read it cover to cover every month. The magazine is based in Annapolis and I sail in the Norfolk area. There are lots of classes offered at the School of Seamanship in Annapolis on everything from Diesel maintenance to navigation. I wish that they had something like that around the Norfolk area. Does anybody else feel the same?

Lets do it!!!

Bob, Let's put together a business plan and offer the courses in Norfolk,Hampton, or Newport News and Williamsburg or Richmond. None of the offerings that you're talking about are rocket science, and it shouldn't be that difficult to find willing instructors. Basic and advanced diesel maintenance, coastal and ICW navigation, basic rigging, inspecting older sailboats, basic fiberglass repair, and basic carpentry courses all come to mind as possible 3 day seminars. I've had several folks here in Richmond voice the same comment, that there should be an alternative to the Annapolis offerings.

I, too, think SpinSheet is a great

resource for mid-upper bay sailors. I'm a contributing writer for SpinSheet (see article on pg 64 in the March 2008 edition)and suggest you -- and any other interested sailors -- write to the publisher, Mary Iliff Ewenson (mary@spinsheet.com), or the editor, Molly Winans (molly@spinsheet.com), and express your interest in a publication aimed at the lower half of the bay. Who knows, they may want to expand their horizons....

Note to Larry

Craig Belcher of Norton Yachts holds two diesel schools every February in Deltaville. It's well attended. Other topics would be great as well.

The only USPS courses that I've seen have been Navigation, and GPS. I may be out of the loop though, so I'll check with them and see what's offered.

Norton's for their customers only?

The only seminars I've seen that they offer have been for folks that purchased boats from them, but I may have missed and announcement. I started to sign up for the diesel course in February, but noticed the disclaimer just before I sent in my reservation.

Tidewater Community College

Don't know if they will offer this course this year, but it would be worthwhile to contact them. Tidewater Community College’s Marine Small Diesel Engines class provides training on the fundamental principles for small marine diesel engine maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and fuel system bleeding procedures for sailboat and similar applications. The course will be presented as a two-day class. The class will meet Saturday from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., April 21, and April 28, 2007. This course was specifically designed for sailboat owners who will enjoy and appreciate the skills learned for their personal satisfaction, safety, and security. Through a hands-on approach, they will learn to confidently perform basic diesel engine maintenance, diagnosis, and repair. Diesel engine systems covered will include: mechanical; lubrication, fresh- and raw-water cooling; low- and high-pressure fuel, exhaust, starting, and charging systems. Additionally, the course will provide a basic and practical approach to troubleshooting with an explanation of the diesel engine operation. Contact Information For additional information about this program, contact Bud Brueggeman at 757-822-5196 or via e-mail at wbrueggeman@tcc.edu.
