I am shopping for a late model H450 or H460 and am curious about using cruising chutes on the B

B and R and spinnaker

The B and R rig, as delivered, will fly a spinnaker; no backstay required. There's a good article or two on B and R theory and downwind performance in the Reference section of this site. It will put your mind at ease about loading the B and R with a chute.

Chuck...We sail a 430 with the B and R..

and use our North crusing spinnaker with no prob. Ours is only 3/4 oz so we drop it at about 15k.. dick McKee S/v Constellation

450 upwind performance

I have a 450 with full-batten main and a full dodger/bimini. Her pointing ability is about average, neither outstandingly good nor particularly bad. The bigger problem you should be aware of is running downwind. Even with a full spinnaker, she doesn't like straight running, as the swept-back spreaders prevent the boom from moving fully to the side. But hey, get her on a beam wind and lookout! We still haven't found a cruising sailboat under 50 feet that can keep up. The windage, by the way, is mostly a problem when docking in a crosswind combined with a current.

I agree...

..with Phil Herring. Go to "Forum Archives" and type in "Spinnaker" and you'll find great advice and experience.
