Has anyone added a spinnaker to a Hunter 23? If so, where did you mount the spinnaker halyard block? Did you have any problems with the spinnaker you choose? Thanks, Bill

H23 Spinnaker

My H23 has a spinnaker which I believe the PO set up and I modified. He atttached a stainless half-ring about 3-4 feet up the mast to mount the spinnaker pole and attached a padeye with a block just under the steaming light for the pole topping lift. The odd thing was, there was no spinnaker halyard, nor was there an opening in the mast above the forestay through which to thread a halyard. What I did was fashion a "crane" from a piece of bar steel (painted black). I drilled holes in the bar and used the bolts at the top of the mast to mount the crane. Those bolts are already there holding the crane to which the backstay and topping lift attach. I then hung a block off the end of the spin crane through another small hole I drilled. Since this is a fractional rig, the spin halyard doesn't need to be mounted at the top of the mast to get above the forestay, but it was an easy solution. I'm guessing the PO used the jib halyard, or simply never finished the installation he started. By the way, I have the Kenyon mast on an '86 H23. Other OEM masts were shipped with these boats.

Funny

but my '85 has a Kenyon mast with 4 halyards running inside. At the base of the mast, the two that exit the starboard side are used for the main and jib while the two that exit the port side are to be used for a spinnaker. On the front of the mast, three of the halyards exit. The one just below the forestay is for the jib. Not having the boat in front of me, I can't remember 100%where the other two exit. I think one exits below the jib and the other above the forestay. If it's important I'll check to see just where the halyards exit. The spinnaker pole ring is installed about 4 - 4 1/2 feet off the deck.

assymetric

You don't tell us what year or mast your boat is..............but I have an '87 with Z spar mast. It has a spinnaker halyard. I bought an assymetric from UK sailmakers. I love it. It makes the difference between motoring and sailing in light air. Fun to play with.

To follow up my earlier post, I checked

tonight and in addition to the jib halyard there is a halyard about one foot above the forestay and another about four feet below. I have no experience with a spinnaker - can anyone explain the use of these two halyards? Thanks

Hi Mike - could you comment on how you rig your assymetric? Did you add a bow sprite? What is your procedure when gybing? Thanks, mm

The halyard that is about a foot above your forestay is the spinnaker halyard. The line that exits the mast about 4 feet below is your pole topping lift or foreguy. This line is rigged to the bridle of your spinnaker pole to control the height of the outboard end of the pole and therefore the height of the spinnaker. Another line would be needed as a pole downhaul rigged to another bridle on the pole which would keep the pole from skying.
