Currently we are looking into Spinnakers for my 290. What should we get? HOW has the cross sectional shape cruising Spinnaker but after speaking to a local sail loft I am wondering? We sail mostly in light winds on a reach very little down wind. Mostly looking to increase sail area. Should we spend the extra on a Tri-Radial sail that can be user from 60 on or will the cross section be good enough. Looking for info.

I had good experience with 3-radial..

.. on my 29.5 .Since the main differance is that 3 radial will keep it's shape better(and flatter) , and longer ,I found it beneficial for the extra 10-15% more, the tri-radial cost . I also specified cruising purpose not racing, so I would get a little heavier ( and stronger) fabric than for racing.you can fly it above 5 knots (relative) but , frankly, it will make a measurable differance above 8 and up to aroud 14 kts, depending on your ( and your crew) knowledge and experience. In light winds, I can keep it 60-70 degrees to wind , no less. get experience , using the sock , and getting the sail up and ( more so , when the breeze gets up..) down , quickly and efficiently ,in light winds. Have fun ,

Doyle triradial cruiser for us

We are very happy with our asymatrical cruiser on our '77 h27. Converts light air days from the "iron genny" to great sailing. (We spent about two cruising days out of 13 on the engine on Lake Erie last summer while a friend spent 5!) Looks great, and it's easy to set and douse. Works 60 degrees off the wind in light air. Happy with HOW

I have the Doyle from HOW on my 320. I have been using it just this summer, but I am happy with it. I have used it with just myself and wife onboard, and it sets and sails easily. I also talked with a local loft prior to purchase, and thier concerns were size (using it for racing) and warranty issues. I do use it for racing (it could have been a little bit bigger and still been legal for PHRF), and the local Doyle loft is right accross the river. They couldn't come close to the price however. I was also very happy with the communication HOW provided throughout. They have my recommendation.
