I am setting up my 2004 Beneteau 331 for racing in JAM (Jib and Main only) this year. I need to add a track to my mast on which the whisker pole will mount. Can anyone tell me what the recommended length of track should be? I don't have a spinnaker yet, but will be looking at that for the future, so I want the track for use with a future spinnaker pole also. Thanks, Tim B331 Table for Two

Tim, I have a 321 that came with a whisker pole (which to be honest I've never used!). Anyway, with a whisker pole, all you really need is a ring, or large padeye type setup on the mast for the pole. Adjusting the inboard height is not neccesary for poling out a genoa. As for you future use of a spinnaker, do some research on what you would rate with a symmetrical chute vs. an asymmetrical sail. The A-Sail will: 1) allow the better downwind performance you desire. 2) cost far less for hardware setup (no pole, no mast track, no pole lift), only two sheets and a tack line required. And BTW, unless you buy a fixed-length whisker pole which would be limited in its use for use as a whisker pole (mine is adjustable) you cannot use it for a spin pole. 3) be easier to handle with short crew, and you will be more apt to use it for cruising as well as racing. 4) cause far less damage to your boat in the long run (ever go aboard a racer with a sym-spin and see the damage the pole does to the foredeck and mast after being banged around for a season?) Also, do some research into the new Jeanneau 35 and see the "bow-sprit" option they offer. This is a great way to increase the size of the a-sail and get it out in front of the boat. Rigging something similar on your 331 would probably cost the same or less than rigging a regular spin pole. Just my thoughts on the topic :) Fair winds _/) Tim
