Subject: [AlbinVega] Re: spinnaker or genaker (assymetrical spinnaker)
I am a sailmaker. I chose an assymetric spi. Last year I did not have
a sock. A main should always be raised as this helps in dousing the
sail. I always had a least 1 reef in the main to avoid blanketing the
spi downwind.
This year I bought an ATN sock. I use no main and the performance of
the sail is spectacular. I felt confident that I could always douse
the sail. Most of the time I doused the spi with the sock while
jibing. It worked out well. We brought no lines aft. Although the
halyard would be more convenient aft it is not necesary with the sock.
The Vega goes downwind well and likes to powered by a spinnaker
(either one). It does not roll. With the sock I would even use it at
night.
As an aside I made the spi at the end of the season with scraps. The
final layout was on the floor and a customer came in and remarked that
it was the same as the Bahama's flag!
