oday 22 Keyport Harbor, Raritan Bay
I have a 22' Oday. A spinnaker and spinnaker pole were included with the boat when I purchased it. I have never used it and I decided to take it out of the basement and put it on the boat to give it a try. I have never used a spinnaker before and am confused with the the telescopic spinnaker pole. One end has a hook type end and the other just has a small straight pin, about 1". I have looked around on line and can't find this pole. Are there any sailors out there that can point me in the right direction for using the spinnaker pole and how to set it up?
Thanks, Jim

jim congrats on trying to use the spinnaker. it will add a whole new dimension of excitement to sailing. i believe from what you describe you have a whisker pole. this is to be used with hanked on headsails anytime the headsail is in the windshadow of the main to project it out and compensate for any little anomolies in your course/wind changes. i don't believe a whisker pole is capable of handling the loads incured by the spinnaker, except possibly on the lightest loads. find someone to help you with this. steve colgate's book ''small boat sailing'' has the best pictures so you can see the theory. after you get a few miles with the spinnaker under your belt, go out a day with just a little too much wind, set it, get up on a beam reach and hang on for some of the most fun. power boaters NEVER get that rush. have fun and come back and tell us about it.
