I am looking to install a set of spinlock cam cleats on my 23 ft hunter. I plan to run my jib line through them. My question is shall i use a plate to reinforce the base or can i just use ss washers?

You will always be better of with a base plate. There can be a tremendous force on the cam cleats.

Would there be that much stress even when wrapped around the winch? I was leaning toward the plate anyways. Thanks for the advise

I installed them on mine. Pictures in my profile. I did not reinforce them even with the 1" riser under them. Just thru bolted with a flat washer and lock nut. They work fine for me on my inland lake and I never go out over 18knots. I think the plywood under it is 1/2" and I have had no problem in 2 years. I always have 1 wrap around the winch. Goodluck with yours, Charles

Just another idea for you. I recently installed a set of "winchers" on my boat for the same purpose. They work great and were cheaper and less trouble than putting spinlocks on.

Over engineering

Never hurts to over-engineering a load point. Other than manufacturing the backing plate, how much more work is it, really? If you don't put it on and it fails, you'll kick yourself and be explaining to your friends for years how you should have put the plate on. If you put the backing plate in and it never fails, you can tell all your friends what a nautical genius you are.

The bolts for cam cleats in that application are in shear (sideways) so big fender washers will be just fine.

Second the Winchers suggestion.

I would like to thank every one for the advice. The 'spinlock" camcleats are installed and working great, if anyone is interested the web site is spinlock.co.uk
