the length of the pole is...
the J measurement of your boat (the length from the tip of the bow to the mast.) Your pole should just go past the forestay. If the pole is 1.5 the length of J then it would be considered a wgisker pole and can be used on your Genny for downwind runs. The whisker pole is usually a bit lighter in weight as it does not carry the stress like a spinnaker pole does.

The J on a O'Day 272 is 10' 6". If the wisker pole is 1.5 times J, the wisker pole would be over 15'. This sounds a little long. I'm guessing that the spinnaker pole would be about 13' Charlie
