Hy Hunter 25 is not rigged for a spinnaker. I have come across a symetrical spinaker that may work, but I am not certain. The dimensions are 25' X 14' foot. If this will work, I am considering rigging for it. Other than whether the sail will work with my boat, I have a few additional questions: (1) What length of spinnaker pole do I need? (2) Sould I installa topping lift and a downhaul? (3) Sould the spinnaker attach to a fixed or sliding mounting bracket on the mast?

Rigging Spinnaker

Your spinnaker is quite small for a 25. You generally want the luff to be about the same length as your I measurement which is about 30" on your boat. The used sail brokers that I have talked to typically recommend the you stay within plus or minus 10% of I. With respect to the foot measurement, 16' to 18' would be about right. I just bought a used spinnaker for my 25 on Ebay with 31" luff and 18' foot. Its on the large side, but I've caught the racing bug and we have alot of light wind days. Rigging for it will be this winter's project. Pole length is typically equal to J measurement, 10.5' on the 25. You can go a little longer or shorter. If you race you will probably take a rating penalty if your pole is longer than J. You definately need a topping lift and downhaul. Mast ring needs to be on sliding track. The sail you have would be good to learn with, but you'll probably want a larger sail in the future. I say go for it. Rick

Spinnaker

I just rigged my H 23 with a racing spinnaker and can say that you will need to get a proper spinnaker pole, uphaul/down-haul, and rig a spinnaker halyard if you don't have one. I too got a cheep (smaller) spinnaker to learning with. But it works great. Mine came off of a Mcgregger 25 and is 23' x 12'. Its about 4' short for my boat, but it was new and $150.00. I might be willing to trade anyone out there for a bigger sail soon. Scott Davis "wsdavis@fmtc.net"
