I'm thinking of buying a speedseal, but I have question for you all: If my Yanmar is aluminum and the speedseal is brass, aren't I creating a galvanization issue if I put them together?

YES

Second Flash's comment. It is probably steel. In either case it is not brass and there are corrosion concerns. With that said, you would have to have both metals in contact with sea water for an electrolytic cell to form. This is unlikely as the cover plate screw holes don't (I believe) go into the pump chamber. If your cover plate screw holes do poke through into the pump chamber then just run some sealant into the holes prior to installing the screws.

Speed Seal

The Speed Seal cover I put on my 4JHE is stainless as are the thumbscrews they include. A couple thoughts. First, I'm no metallurgist but I believe the nobility difference between the stainless and iron is minimal. Second, if installed properly the plate actually seats on an O-ring which is why it doesn't require a traditional gasket for installation. That significantly reduces corrosion potential. Because the thumb screws are outside of the actual seal they should be dry. If you're still concerned about the screws then a little anti-seize, as Bill suggests, certainly won't hurt. I've had no galvanic corrosion issues with my Speed Seal and am very happy with it (other than the price tag.) I consider it a significant safety item.

Rick is right!

We've had our speedseal on our 3GM for 4 years with no sign of corrosion-And I also agree it's a significant safety feature. the small brass screws yanmar uses to install the std cover would be an issue after a number of years, and if you strip the slots trying to get them out.......

Yanmar

I called Yanmar because I couldn't find any "pencil" zincs and I wanted spares. They told me the whole engine was aluminum, therefore, no zincs. I got a manual. Confirmed. I think I will get the speedseal. It sounds like no one has seen any issues. My engine is a 3JH2E. Let me know if you think I was handed incorrect information.

I'll bet

everything I own that you were. And fresh water cooled Yanmars have no zincs because the only metal in contact with raw water is brass. (until it gets to the elbow.)

Corrosion information

This is a good article on corrosion and boats. I would not worry about the Speed Seal causing you any problems. It is an excellent question, though. http://www.corrosionsource.com/handbook/galv_series.htm
