Holding tanks

How do you know when it's full: Visually check the level before leaving the dock and even during a cruise of more than a day to see how full it's getting. If the tank location doesn't allow you to do that, install a gauge--one that lets you know what the level is, not just when it's full--and check it often. The Snake River AcuGage (link below) is the best choice. Head for the nearest pumpout BEFORE it shows full...overflowing out the vent is a BIG no-no. For odor prevention, use K.O. or Odorlos in the tank according to the directions on the bottle. And read the articles in the Head Mistress forum reference library (click on the link to it on the forum homepage) to learn how to maintain your toilet, holding tank and fresh water systems.

This and that.

Craig: A couple of things that I have found to clean the decks are the West Marine or Star Brite non-skid cleaner. You just wet down the decks squirt a little on and scrub it down. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and scrub again, then rinse it off. If the non-skid is really bad you should try Island Girl Pink. It can either be sprayed on undiluted or you can mix it with water and scrub it down. I have found that some of the stuff that gets in the non-skid is almost impossible to remove. I use a very stiff scrub brush and this along with the proper cleaner usually does the job. For the spiders I use a little of this and that. If you get spiders in the lazarettes or lockers, try pest strips. I actually tuck these in the main sail during the fall and winter too. They really seem to keep most all bugs out. I also use dog flea collars on the life line stanchions and pulpits. They only last for about 3-6 months but seem to keep the population under control. We ususally see web forming when they are ready to be replaced.

Bomb

We had an infestation of spiders in one of our yachts. What we did was buy one of those spray bombs. You simply set the thing off and close the hatch for 234 hours. Every spider and bug in the yacht cops it. Make sure you open all the draws and doors prior so the fumes get in everywhere. Do not go back down there for 24 hours.

Loop in over flow line

On my 87, 28.5, the fuel fill and over flow line are both aft and starboard of the main lazzerette. Simple fix for me was to open the lid of the compartment built into the starboard helm position that has an insert in it for use as a catch all, trash bin,or captain's personal cooler. Lift out the insert and you should see the top of your fuel tank as well as the hose that runs to over flow outlet. I replaced the hose with a clear reinforced hose I could see through, put a 360 loop in it.Now,when I fill my tank I monitor the over flow hose and at first sign of deisel entering,I stop filling. No spills since!

Fuel vent hose

Replacing your fuel vent hose with clear hose MAY have been a bad idea if the hose isn't rated for fuel. I may be wrong, but I don't think any clear hose is. Vent hoses aren't overflow hoses, btw. Their sole purpose is to allow air in and out of tanks.

Hot Shot

for Spiders. Spray your dock lines. Also a shot inside any lockers, then quick close them. The fumes kill them. Doesn't seem to hurt any particular surface. We get it at the grocery store, but I've also seen it at Wal-Mart.
