While doing some maintenance in the quarter berth and in the sail locker this morning, I noticed A LOT of spiders. I can manage tight spaces and high places but spiders weird me completely. Does anybody have a method of de-infesting and preventing infestations of -spiders?

Call out the team

"Twenty Mule Team Borax" works in a basement. I don't know about their sea going cousins? Apply dry, on ledges or lips. If this isn't possible throw a little bit into web. I use moth balls in a nylon stocking during winter storage, but remove in spring, to get rid of smell.

Flea collars seem to work for him in the CA Delta, where he has the same problem. He puts them on the stanchions... not around anyone's neck!

Get em when it is dark

Go over your boat once a week with bug spray. Take a flashlight and spray them in the dark. You will find them out and easy to find.

Flea Collars

I have been using flea collars on the dockside stanctions for the past three seasons with noticable results. They last 2 to 3 months and need to be replaced. You will get better results if you also use the stanctions on the opposite side too.

Sailing spiders

I suspect that my spiders are sailing in on web strands. Our rigging is covered with long single strands of spider silk. If this is the case, I don't know HOW effective the collars are going to be. As for the mid-night spider hunt; that ought to do my phobia a whole world of good. Mothballs, I actually kinda like the way they smell but my wife and son are asthmatic so I'll have to pass. I was sort of looking for a spider motel kinda thing. What about cutting up collars and leaving the pieces all over the interior. What ever I do, I think I should hurry before the wasps move in for the free lunch.

No Pest Strips

I hate spiders, and we do not have a big problem with them, as the folks a bit further south, but hardware stores carry a product called a no pest strip. We put the strips in the boat, one foreward one aft, keeps most bugs out for us.(except Jersey bird sized mosquitoes)for those we spray about an hour before bed time, usually works well. Now, if we could only find something that works on green head flies,on the water, we would be set!

Electronics

I can really sympathize with you on the spider plight. I can't remember the name of the unit, but there is an electronic pest ridder, that emits a high frequency pitch that drives bugs away. I used it two years ago and never had a problem when using. Unfortunatly I lost the device, and just never replaced. I actually don't mind the spiders, because they keep all the insects at bay, and a good cleaning keeps the spider population down. Good luck. Cheers TJ

Electronics and Eucalyptus Oil

This year I am trying Ultrasonic noise makers - pack of 3 from Costco for $15. They are 110v so only good at the dock. Someone else recommended Eucalyptus oil which I am trying on the dodger and bimini. I cannot tell you how effective this is yet.

Moth balls

Put several in mesh bags (cut up old pantyhose are good) and scatter 'em around the boat...hang 'em from the rails and the boom. All insects hate moth balls. Replace the moth balls once a month.

Good News -- Bad News

The good news is that we've found something that's very effective in eliminating spiders. The bad news is that they are wasps. The really bad news is that they both bite! Has anyone found any really dangerous spiders like Brown Recluse or Black Widow? Mine just seem to be a nuisance but their bites do itch like mosquito bites. Spiders and other uninvited guests make overnighting a nightmare. Ken S/V Wouff Hong
