My Ben Oc clipper 311, has the depth and speed sensor located just aft of the water tank beneath the bow bunk. I was told to de foul it, I could unscrew it in site, in the water! I looked at the waterline and it appears the top of the pot it lives in would be beneath the waterline and thus flood the compartment if I were to remove the sensor and wheel from its housing. Any ideas, other than getting in the water!

There should be a "dummy" plug to swap out with the sensor. Have the dummy in one hand, pull the sensor out with the other, swap, and less than a quart of water comes in. Don't know if your thru-hull has the internal flap to limit ( but not prevent) water coming in. keep a towel hand for mop-up. I find that if you do this underway, less water comes in. The depth and speed are probably different sizes, maybe the depth being larger diameter.

I'm with Ron on this one. You should have a "plug" that looks very much like the speed sensor itself. Zebra mussels tend to foul the impeller here and I find myself pulling the sending unit every 4-6 weeks during the season.

Just a quick pull `n swap. I get under a cup or two of water that comes in, less if this is done while underway.

With dummy plug in hand pull sensor and insert dummy ensuring you use spare lockinh nut to hold dummy plug in place.
The first time is the worst after that it is just a routeen maintenance job

It is scary to pull out the sensor, you get a big jet of water. However it would take hours for that inflow to sink you. So relax have a snack and then wade forward and insert the dummy plug.

The thought is worse than the practice. The dummy plug should be somewhere on your boat. Just do it, like already said the first time is the worst. Bet it still nowhere near the speed your GPS tells you even after the clean up!

The speed sensor is supposed to be removed from the hole (in theory) every time you leave the boat unused like during the week to prevent fouling of the wheel. That's why the hole is designed with a flap and a dummy plug to reduce water inflow. Loosen the threaded plastic ring and pull straight up by the metal ring. Make sure you understand which way is forward on the dummy plug...there's an arrow on it. I suggest you do it in the slip. Water inflow is minimal. Good luck.

Note...depth and speed sensor are different sizes (on a 331 anyway).
Make sure you have the correct size dummy plug in hand.
Just causes a little more cleanup time while scrambling for the right one if you dont.

There's only on size dummy plug that goes where the speed transducer comes out of. The depth transducer is NOT removable and has no dummy plug.

... The Depth Transducer Is Not Removable And Has No Dummy Plug.
You Know Not Of What You Speak. Others Already Said Both Are Removeable. Yours May Not Be, But Others Are, SO YOU SHOULD NOT LABEL THEM AS INCORRECT.

My depth sensor is not removable. Not sure why you would want to remove it anyway. If it's fouled just lightly scrub underwater. However I have yet to see one fouled

The purpose for being able to remove the speed sensor is because you occasionally get 'something' between the paddles. Also you have the ability to change out the paddle.
