What's the top speed of a Hunter 26? I have a knotmeter and I've never seen it above 2.9 in 20 knot wind or even with the Honda 9.9 at full throttle. I read in a test article that a 8hp could make it do 5.0.

Check your knotmeter

The chart on the HOW site lists the 26 hull speed at 6.4 knots. It's hard to believe that you can't get over 2.9. Sounds like your knotmeter needs attention. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

GPS speed of 8.165 knots

I've had my 260 up to approximately 7.1 mph as measured by GPS which would translate to 8.165 knots. I say approximately because I doubt I broke the theoretical hull speed of 7.36 knots, and the difference I encountered was likely due to GPS inaccuracy. GPS measures the speed over the ground which is different from through-the-water speed and speed relative to the wind I believe. Maybe someone with more knowledge on this can post..

Other Way Around

Greg, I believe you converted backwards. 1 knot is more than 1 mph, since a nautical mile is more than a statute mile. Your true max was approx 6.2 knots (more in line with hull speed). Kind of like exceeding the speed of light ;-) Eric Gruff

Thanks Guys

Yes, I am quite sure my knotmeter needs calibration. I've only owned the boat since May and I've had problems with the other instruments so I'll check it out with a GPS.

I don't believe it either

But the knot meter on Proposal has read 7.2 knots. Of course we were making a lot of leeway at the time. She's most at 5 knots. Mark

old way speed

The old way of checking your speed goes like this: (1) ask a person standing on the bow to throw a piece of something floating ahead of the running boat (2) when the bow of your 8 meter boat will pass the floating think he (she!) will scream NOW! (3) you standing on the aft click on your stop watch (4) when the floating stuff "passes" the aft you click again (5) take the boat length in meters (8m) and divide by time in seconds and this is your speed. If you like math: NM is 1852 meters and i hour is 3600 secoonds it means that 1 knot is almost exactly 0.5 m/s. I used to sail w/o knotmeters, and it worked! If you do not like polluting waters... a good spit will work also!

H26 Speed Demon

Dear Jim, I have been away on vacation and it looks like you have beat this subject to death already, but for what it is worth: I have a 95 H26 with a Honda 9.9 and a Garmin 45 GPS. After many hours of sailing in inland lakes and coastal cruising my knot meter and my GPS agree pretty well in the absence of current. It is difficult for me to get my boat over 6.3 knots. I have hit 6.4 a time or two. Under motor, you can easily hit top speed with the Honda 9.9 long before full throttle. If you use more throttle you will make more noise and use more gas, but will not go any faster. You probably have your knot meter recalibrated by now. Best wishes, Ned Christensen Eugene, OR "Second Wind"
