I would like to add a Raymarine ST40 Bidata to my 1997 23.5, any suggestions for installation by owner? Through hull location, wiring, etc…

Russ, The latest issue of "Sail" mag shows

a very simple method of mounting the transducer into the bildge area without cutting a thru-hull. It also allows for the hull curveture. I wish they would have printed that issue last summer. I can't comment on your gauges as I am not knowledeable on that type. But with the wealth of info on mounting these type of gauges without cutting a hole in a perfectly good boat bottom you should have it much easier that I did. Ray S/V Speedy

Location

Russ, I have a 1994 23.5. My transducers are located aft of the centerboard. They are accessable from the aft berth in the center bilge access. My display unit is located in the cabin bulkhead on forward roght side of the cockpit. The wires run along the wiring to the fuse / switch panel and then to the battery compartment, then aft to the transducers. I like everything about my installation except for the transducer location. I would have out the transducers forward or the keel in the compartment below the V-berth. The wiring can run down the right side to the battery and then foolow the wiring to the fuse / switch panel. That's my 2 cents... Dave Simply Magic

GPS for depth

I have never used my GPS for depth. How can the GPS know the depth at your location? I would not use a GPS for my depth, I think that is pretty risky.

gps for depth ans

it has a chart like the paper ones it shows the depths just like on paper(mean low) but then it takes a signal from tide stations and adds the difference from the tide sta to give you a depth reading accurate to within fifteen feet of your position on the chart plus it is a swing keel it draws 18" board up its very sandy here in plymouth harbor i was using the keel for a depthsounder last year when i heard it clunking off the bottom id just raise it and tack risky ?

GPS for depth is risky!

You're assuming that the chart data (both position and depth) in the GPS are accurate and current. Don't forget that charts (whether paper or electronic) are not always accurate, paper charts and GPS don't always agree, and many of the hydrographic surveys used to make charts are old. Bottoms do move around. On top of that, if your GPS ever fails, you're screwed. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but I firmly believe in not relying on a single source for my position data. In addition, independent depth measurement can be used to fix your position, which is something you can't do if the depth and position are automatically linked. Happy sailing. Peter H23 "Raven"

Whoa ......

I agree with the previous response. Ask your self this question: Do I want to gut a hole in my boat to mount a transducer, or would I rather pay the insurance deductable? Think about this also; here on the Great Lakes, the water level in down 40+ inched over the past few years. That make those sunken trees, bolders, and other critters 40 inches closer to my hull. I mounted the same Raython 3 years ago. Cut the hole, slapped on some 5200, and have never had an issue. Good luck :->

"plus it is a swing keel it draws 18" board up its very sandy here in plymouth harbor i was using the keel for a depthsounder last year when i heard it clunking off the bottom id just raise it and tack risky ? " i realize its not for everyone ive been sailing in this harbor for over 25 years its not like i dont know the area pretty well i just use the depth function because i like having the info availabe remember you cant run aground if your in the channel
