Hunter 38 Gore Bay
Hi - we are working hard to perfect Don G's sail trim controls on our Hunter 38 - 2010 model with in mast furling and a 110 jib.

Yesterday we hit 7.8 knots at 80 degrees, with 1 reef and full jib and about 18 knots of wind (apparent). We also hit 7.7 with a second reef and reefed jib - with just over 20 knots of wind. I should note that we also manage to do 7.5 regularly with 14 knots and our full sail package out. (SOG - using GPS)

I've done the theoretical calc based on a 34.8 LWL and that is just under 8 knots.

My question is will we ever hit that elusive 8 knots.?. (PS- Using current doesn't count). Has anyone managed this in our model?

We have a 2008 model and managed 9.1 SOG-GPS leaving Block Island last Saturday. True wind 25kts, no reefs, wind fluttering between 120 and 130 relative. Probably hit the mark while surfing, boat was pretty hard to control. The H38 seems to be fastest with the wind at 120 we also cruise in the high 7kt range in 15 to 18kts of wind pretty regularly.

9.1 wow....

Thanks for your response, I can imagine it would have been tough to handle at 9.1!! Thanks for your comments about the 120 being your best point of sail - this is a great benchmark!

Any other Hunter 38 owners have a perspective?
