How close is too close. I'm looking for a location for speakers on my 222. I'm thinking on the cabin walls facing the cockpit, but on the starboard side is my compass. How close can I mount an 8 ohm speaker? Is there a better place for the speakers?

Speakers near compass?

Kurt - be very careful! That thing on the back of the speaker that makes it so heavy is a giant magnet, usually 1lb or more. It will affect your compass. There are shielded speakers on the market designed to be placed on or next to a TV without distorting the picture, but I don't know if any of them are waterproof.

1st thought.......speakers MUST be no closer than 3 feet from a compass......... 2nd thought..........you can mount the speakers down on the sides of the cockpit seats.......on the transom facing foward, or on the cockpit seatbacks. ANother optoopn is to get bracket mounted speakers and mount them from the stern rail (hanging down)

Check the photo forum

Kurt: There's a good example in this web site's Photo Forum. It's titled "Cockpit speakers without the holes," and it was posted in 2002 by a Hunter owner named Chuck Fort. It's worth a look -- shows how to mount cockpit speakers on the stern rails. No cutting into the fiberglass, no magnetic interference with the compass.
