Speakers- owner's poll

Looking at adding a stereo system on the boat and was just curious... where are other 240 owners mounting their speakers in the cabin? I thought about the two access panels just to either side of the companionway hatch; but am very open for suggestions.I think that a couple of big waterproof box speakers will work quite nicely under the stern rail seats.

Speakers

I flush mounted two speakers on the two access panels below the winch. They look great, very neat installation, and have work well. Only problem is that they are facing twards the bow and therefore it is often difficult to hear anything in cockpit without turning the volume up high.

Bose Speakers

Our 240 is 2 yrs old and we added a stereo this year.You could mount the bose under the seat, but use some sort of removable hinge to put the speakers away while you are gone. The temptation is too great for marina visitors to grab them.I mounted my speakers on the vertical wall just behind the curtains to the V-berth. Both are pointed to the opposite stern rail seat and the sound quality in the cabin & out in the cockpit is superb. There is less danger of theft.... And the sound is not offensive to the boats on either side. (Maybe to the boat directly behind us????.....)

I mounted mine...

...flush in the vertical surface of the port and starboard settee base along with the radio. Looks great. Sounds OK.Mark KisselKittiwake/98H240

And mine are....

...mounted on either side of the v birth opening up near the access panels. I was able to use a coat hanger and fish the wires for the starboard side speaker back to the speaker so the wires are hidden. The port side wires are fed under the plastic piece that holds the curtain (which I loosened so I could get the wire under it) and then fed back with the starboard side wires to the stereo unit.Good luckBill WelschS/V Renewal

One last idea ...

I went back on forth on this for a long time and finally decided on (and fashioned) the following:I cut two black plastic squares to match the cheap plastic access panels in the cabin (the ones for the winches). Cut a mounting circle in each and mounted the speakers (facing somewhat down in the cabin) and reinstalled. Looks awesome and sounds even better.To add to this, I built and "electronics panel" out of birch plywood and cherry to fit behind the galley sink. It's a great looking box (painted to match the interior, except the face which is woodtone) and houses:1) AM/FM cassette2) VHF radio3) Cigarette adapter with cover4) Map light5) Binocular holder6) Fire extinguisher7) Chart holder on backI've received more compliments on this unit and would be willing to share the design with anyone. I hard wired this entire box to it's own battery and it's been my savior (since installing anything on a 240 is a trick). All the wiring is hidden and runs aft and then through the bildge up into the box. Very neat.Hope this helps
