I can not find my owners manual for my 1999 0r 2000 nissan 5 hp 2 stroke outboard, I had someone tune it last year and he put a champion spark plug in it , I want to replace it with the nkg or ngk, that the owners manual calls for , thanks , Mike
Mike, my manual is on the boat and I'll try to remember to check, but many of the plugs that you buy nowdays (such as NKG or champion) are pre-gapped at the factory and do not require setting the gap. I'll see if I can find it, though.
Hi, If your motor is calling for a champion, use a champion.I have found that NGK will not run in a Champion system and a Champion will not run as well in a NGK system. I do not know why--it just is that way. In my motorcycle days I a NGK guy, but my johnson outboard motoer showed me reason not to use the NGK.It is agood idea to check the gap before installing a plug just in case it was droped.Mark
Paul, thanks a lot , I happen to have a spare ngk, I think the champion might be the one the mech installed, I like to stick with factory recommendations, hope you have a great season , MIke
Regardless of what the mfg. will tell you. All spark plugs are not created equally. I have tried AC spark plugs in my Tohatsu and they only last for a couple of weeks of use. When you use the NGK plugs they will last for a season or more, depending on usage.I have experienced the same thing with my car. Bosch plugs have an excellent life and the rest of them are crap. Go figure, I suppose the mfg test and tune their engines for the attributes of the plugs and the ignition systems.
