I just bought a Lehr 5HP propane engine for the dink, and want to store a propane tank in the spare propane locker of my Hunter 380 for outboard fuel. I'm traveling right now, and away from the boat. Can anyone tell me the diameter of the locker? Also, any idea on the max height of the tank? Should be able to handle a slightly-taller tank than the one which feeds the stove since it won't have all the supply equipment on top.

TIA,
Dave

im not sure what size of tank you are using, but for a 20lb cylinder, which is commonly called a 5gallon cylinder, the diameter must be 13inches and it must be 19inches tall to contain the cylinder...

I know that will be too big. So I still need the dimensions of what will fit in the spare log locker.

Dave,

I'm not sure if you are aware or not, but that starboard propane locker has been shortened on that boat to allow the genset to slide under it.

Thanks for that critical piece of info, John. Guess I will have to measure carefully when I get home. The Lehr engine will run off small camper-stove propane bottles and I have several stored in that locker now. If I want to use that locker to store fuel for the dinghy, that may be the only available solution. Otherwise, it's back to leaving a composite tank in the dinghy when it's on davits.

Yes don't take chances and measure your locker as even the 1 gallon tanks come in different size configurations.

Could you store the outboard propane cylinders in the anchor locker ? I don't know how your boat is constructed but I've seen that done on other Hunters.
I keep the little cylinders for our BBQ in small mesh sheet bag from Westmarine, it has a zipper to hang it on a lifeline.
Our propane locker was designed for two 4.25 lb. propane cylinders. There is plenty of space under it on a 356, so it was enlarged to take two 10 lb. aluminum cylinders. An easy modification.
