What do you carry in the way of spare parts? Raw water pump impeller wheels, drive belts, oil or gas filters, engine coolant, a spare GPS or who knows what?? Maybe more importantly, what did you wish you had with you that one time when a whadyacallit went out and you didn't have a spare? What did you do for a jury rig? So what's the story?

Vessel Assist

A membership with Vessel Assist (or any tow company) is the best spare part you can have. It is some much easier to be towed to your slip to make repairs than under sail in rough water. Actually I carry spare filters, all belts, small hoses, fuel pump, impeller, injector, O-rings, handheld VHF, lines, sweaters/coats for people who don't realise how cold it is on water, nuts and bolts and wire and last but not least DUCT tape a sailor's best friend).

Spares ..

Murray .. Your list is just about the same as mine ... Be sure You include a good toolkit ... zipties... spare shackles, pins&keys, blocks, sheets, anchor & rode and a spare. first aid kit. I have had to use most of these at one time or another! Including Vessel Assist! You cant have enough Duct Tape - It's like The Force! It has a light side and a dark side and it binds the universe together !!! Be Prepared and Be Safe !!

Now I always carry one, wish I had then...

I always carry a manual bilge pump now...Lost a seal around the shaft on the propeller and ended up with a whole in the bottom of the boat pretty much!...long story short, took on enough water to short out the electrical,(bilge pumps, 2 of them that were running stopped)just barely made it in to run aground and save her or at least major damage...I still count this as my closest call. I do not know that a hand pumped bilge pump would have helped, but I feel better having one!

Your best spare......

......is yourself. At one time or another repairs will be needed for everything aboard. Eventually, everything that can fail, will. At the worst possible time. If you are 8 miles off a lee shore and 50 from the nearest port, a call to vessal assist won't get it. Redundancy, that is, having 2 of everything is the best solution, but is a bit ridiculous. Carry tools-lots of 'em. You can't have too much line or ground tackle aboard. Carry spares for: filters, belts, impeller, pumps(including head), bulbs, fuses, everything that you might wear out, clog or blow. A good supply of electrical connectors, screws, pins, shackles, needles, thread, sail repair tape and various raw materials including a good sized 2x4, other wood/plastic pieces and some WIRE. Electrical as well as rigging. Cable clamps. Oil. Antifreeze. Hose/hose clamps. All of this takes up less room than you might imagine if you get a few of those "organizer" carry cases at Home Depot. Build your inventory over time. Sort and consolidate once in a while so that you can find what you need when you need it. Having all of this aboard gives a good chance of fabricating some sort of fix to get you home. Making you the hero! Hey, did you check to see if your manual bilge pump actually works lately? How about your emergency tiller? Plugs at every thru-hull? It truly is a consuming activity, this sailing safely, isn't it? Happy Sailing! Ron Hughes S/V "Best Revenge" H 40.5
