I'm just wondering, those of you who don't have the big built in tanks.
If you carry extra gas for an extended trip, do you need a special marine rated tank, or just a plain gas can?
I looked at Academy for marine style gas cans, but all they had was gas tanks with hook ups for motors. None of their connections are compatible with my Honda.

during a weeks cruise on Lake Powell, we slung extra fuel cans from the deck cleats and over the side. never even got them wet. with an extra 20 gallons, we had plenty.

I have carried 1 of the non-venting 2.5 gallon in the laz, along with my 2) 6 gal tanks. (for an emergency ) (my laz is passive vented) w/ 3 inlets

if you want to carry a lot, I'd get some long boards, attach them to the stanchions, and tie the tanks to those. (like big boats).

or you could tie them to the bow pulpit. (I think walt does that)

I would not put them in the back near the bbq or in the cabin.

the new non venting tanks seem to work well. (they do bulge a bit, but so far no issues).

GL!

(edit: in Houston, I think putting them over the sides on the bow cleats they would get wet (splashed) in the chop.... but maybe fine if you double bag them) that would lower the CG.

then again, USCG might want to talk to you about having them there..

Basically I was wondering about the legal aspect. I wanted to bring a couple of 2 gallon plastic cans. I would lash them to the life line up on the forward deck. They aren't vented but I don't have ventilation in my laz--- yet.

no problem.

external portable gas tanks should be carried above decks if the laz is not vented.

pretty normal to see big cruising sailboats with several gas/diesel/water tanks on the decks tied to boards between the stanchions.

Some make fancy covers for them.. which helps w/ heat and UV.

I can see no reason you cannot adapt a tank to your honda.
The quick connects on the OEM tank and line are different than what I can buy at the local store. My local Honda dealer, doesn't stock anything for the smaller motors, I would have to special order the hardware, and I just haven't done it. I probably should.
Eventually I want a permanent, larger tank in the laz. For now I don't have ventilation there.

^good point.

don't underestimate the difficulty of refueling the tanks at sea.

I got some ~1" x 6' reinforced clear hose at HD that I slip over my carry jugs spout to refill the laz tanks. the hose is not fuel safe, but its been fine for 4 yrs, and I can feel confident not to dump fuel in the laz if I need to refill.

(I flush them with water when done...)

a transfer pump would be a good idea... depending on where the tanks sits.
and the transfer rate, and arm strength.

( I have one end flared a bit to slip over a fuel dock pump nozzle ... in case)

Doehunter,
Look up owner mods under V21 (more on venting) to see my solution for a vented gas tank. I use a 6 gallon above-deck gas tank in the lazarette but it's vented thru the transom. I know your 26 is configured differently, and my little 4hp merc doesn't use as much fuel as a 9.9 or the like - most of my fuel goes into the tow vehicle at the end of the season, but this can give you an idea of what to set up for a larger tank. refueling underway is not an easy task and I also had a spare can tip over and manage to leak a large portion of fuel out before discovered, so naturally make sure it's lashed down.

I spent 5 days on the water and did a fair amount of motoring. I carried 4 gallons on the foredeck lashed to a lifeline. I never used it! At the end of my trip, I still had a quarter tank left in my 3 gallon tank. That little motor just hardly uses fuel.
It was nice to have the extra though, just in case.

did you figure the gal/hour?
no, but I think I remember seeing it posted here, maybe it was Sumner.
1/2 to 3/4 gallon per hour? I did most of my motoring pretty slow and the water was relatively flat. Maybe 4-5 mph, so I would lean towards thinking consumption was pretty low.

on a shorter trip, try to get your number. (fillup /motor/fillup)

its very useful to know what you actually burn...

my 2 stroke is almost double at full throttle than say 4knts

I took a small 2.5 tank out (and a jug), and motored for half hour and checked it (filled), before heading over to the 10,000 islands, where there is no fuel to be found at any price.

I still squeeze a non venting 1.25 in the laz for a just in case... when I head over there.. (even vhf has limited reach).

depending on where you go it can be very helpful.

glad this trip was a good one!
