I sail a 37.5 and currently have 2 Danforth anchors. I am planning a trip from CT down the ICW and believe I should have an anchor to cope with different bottom types. Practical Sailor has given the Spade good reports and I have also read good reports about the Delta. Can anyone help with this decision? Mat S/V Just Ducky

spade

Mat, I have a 44 lb spade with 200 feet all chain rode as my primary on my H410. its never moved in some tough conditions, like the salt pond at Block. (seems like I'm almost always last into the anchorage there so I never get one of the prime spots.) the spade has stayed set with a 135 degree wind shift. I'd agree w/ PS review of the anchor. I generally set with 4-5 times scope. Bryce S/V Spellbinder H410

I have the same arrangement as Bryce on my H420... In 4 years going up and down the ICW, my Spade has dragged only once... and that was in an unusual spot on the slop of the channel just south of the pontoon bridge in NC.. People can say whatever they want about all the other anchors... I'll keep my Spade ... it IS as good as the PS articles say. Buck s/v L'Attitude

Spade and Delta

While preparing Makai (brand new boat) to head to the Cribbean I researched and reviewed many different anchors in additions to my own experinces. Practical Sailors' review of the Spade help me make up my mind. We picked a steel 45 pound as our primary and added a 35 pd Delta (from our old boat) as the secondary. The tests acutally bared out in practice. We have not had a breakout yet with the Spade. It sets in every bottom we dropped it in from the Chesapeake bay down to the ABCs. We road on it for Ivan in Curacao. The Spade may be fairly uncommon and a little more expensive but when you need it, anchor tackle is not a place to save money or to be undersized. In the Chesapeake bay ours was the first one I saw. Here in the caribe a large number of cruiser have it as primary.

Spade

I have a 33lb Spade with 150 feet of chain as primary. In three years - sets first try everytime and has never dragged with exteme windshifts in up to moderate conditions.
