I'm planning a trip to Block Island - maybe Martha's Vinyard In the past I always made the trip via the Long Island Sound - old port Oyster Bay. Well I'm south shore now and would greatly appreciate any guidance as to harbors to anchor in, towns, etc. that would make my trip to BI more enjoyable. Should I just stick to the ocean or should I go though Peconic Bay? Thanks in advance

Power or Sail

The peconic has some great harbors in sag harbor and greenport and shelter island but you can't get to the peconic from south shore unless your power boat or go around montauk. nick

Shinnecock

You can go through the canal if you can take your mast down. There are 3 low bridges between Shinnecock bay and the canal that do not open. I know of a guy in Bay Shore who takes his 326 to Block. He won't singlehand in the ocean at night, so he ducks inside the Shinnecock inlet and anchors just outside the channel. A little risky, I think, because there's not a lot of water in there. Nick's right - you need to get around Montauk to get to those great harbors. I was in Greenport today (by car, not boat unfortunately). Great place to hang out.

No Way

I sail the peconic all the time and you can not go under the very low brighes unless you demast my freinds always ask if we can but I always say no plus like gregg said the south side of the canal has very little deep water for sail boats so be careful. Hi gegg how's the new boat, next time your in greenport take the ferry to shelter island and than to sag harbor its a great day trip,my wife loves sag harbor they have lots more shops and restaurants than greenport and you can also stay outside the break water free and than dingy into town where the town dock lets you tie up your dingy or you can get a slip in town slips but call first on vhf. nick

Hi Nick -

The boat is great! Hope to be spending a lot of time on it this week while on vacation. Really hoping to get out to the Peconic....we'll keep an eye on the weather and let you know if I'm going.

Thanks Guys

Haven't bought the charts yet - Thanks for telling me about the low bridges. I too thought that the Shinnecock inlet looked like a good waystation.
