Someliquid waste has been seeping into the bilge and I have not been able to find the leak. The holding tank is encased in fiberglass, so before I cut this nice finish in the bathroom, can you tell me where possibly this seepage starts from. Your help is much appeciated.

Aluminium tank

Dear Peggy, Not sure if it is aluminium, there is no access to it. I would venture that it is zinc, galvanized probably. Water tank as well as diesel tank is zinc. I will contact Hunter to find out exactly what it is. Thanks for your prompt response. Jean Hrab

If the tank is metal...

It's almost certainly your tank that's leaking--which means you're gonna have to create access to it to replace it with a plastic tank. Don't even think of trying to repair the leak...urine is so corrosive that the first leak is ONLY the first leak...and it's about to spring others. Not what you were hoping to hear, was it? :-(

Better the devil you know

Better the devil you know, than the devil you do not know: you are correct I was hoping it was a source other than what you mention but it was the only logical solution. Yes the tank is aluminium (thanks to a speedy service from Hunter Technical people). It also produces a loud bang when the pump out is nearly completed. Now where can I get a plastic tank to fit this particular space along with all the fittings and proper vents. Many thanks, Jean Hrab

Bonjour Jean:

One of the website for tanks can be found at (http://www.raritaneng.com). There are obvious other available. Practical Sailor just did an article on tanks too. The thing that I wanted to point out to you is that there are a couple of tools on the market that may make cutting the fiberglass from the tank much easier. One option is a Dremmel tool and the other is Rotary Zip tool. They have bits that look like drill bits. You can just cut a line around the opening large enough to extract the tank. If you use a straight edge for cutting the line you will have a nice piece of material to use when you replace it. You can then use some fiberglass and re-gelcoat the surface. Good luck and happy cutting.

Steve gave you the best source for a new tank

(Now that we no longer sell them<g>). Raritan has nearly 300 rectangular shapes to choose from and nearly 100 non-rectangular shapes...all top quality, extra-thickwalled tanks from several mfrs...most can oriented any direction because they're made to order with the fittings installed where you need them and in the sizes you need when the tank is made.
