For God's sake, be sure to buy one whose shaft is completely cylindrical, and not one of those oval jobs. It will go ba-thump, ba-thump, ba-thump instead of whirrrrrrr.

I'd also recommend the Spin-Tec.

Ken - Your current sail can be converted from a hanked on version to one which will work with roller furling. If your sail is in good shape, this is the most economical way to go. I can give you a price for this service. If you are interested, send me an email - Bly@SailboatOwnwers.com

I assume that people who the use the site know my name, but you make a good point. I will disclose that I'm speaking on behalf of the site and not providing objective advice. My sincere apologies if there has been any confusion about that; it's not my intent. This is a fairly expensive group of web sites to run due to the bandwidth, hardware, and software required to maintain them. Revenues from advertising the store pay for that and the people who moderate, program, etc. We do feel justified in promoting our merchandise, softly and when appropriate, through this forum, but we will clearly disclose our bias in the future. That said, which sail loft do you work for?

No Problems with HOW
We have bought a few things from HOW and had no problems. The price was very close to what I would of paid anywhere else. If buying something from HOW keeps the web site free then we are happy to do our part. Try getting the level of service at one of the big name marine stores that one gets here. It used to be that when I went in there I was talking to a boater now it's some 18 year old kid (nothing against 18 year old kids). If I want something thats not in the store they will order it for me but they have to charge my Visa card while I wait for my order. Whats really funny is I can go across the marina and order something from another 2 person store and if I tell him before 11am I will have it by 3pm.

I have to agree. There is no other web site that provides this type of service. Most of them a basically broadcasting you a email from another member or provide some bulletin board. There is no way to look back at previous posts (archives). They don't provide expert commentators. They are not providing any where near the amout of expertise. But they do fill your mailbox with a lot of mail. What they do have in common is that they are ALL trying to sell something. There is not an easy way to keep a website going if you (a) cannot make a living from the site (b) generate revenue to pay for the equipment required. If you happen to be on ANY Sailnet site, they send you emails all the time trying to get you to purchase merchandise from their site. If you do not want to purchase something from their site or this one don't do it. If there is a problem with any item sold on THIS site you will know about it in short order. So MJ if you do your homework you will find out that this is the place to be, shop and listen.

My 2 cents that Hunter should read...
Having just spent 2 days at the Annapolis boat show, I reconfirmed that my pick of boats is Hunter and fell in love with the 460. (Seen it before, just liked it better this time.) My choice of Hunter is more for the "user friendliness" of Hunters, the cost/benefit of the boats (for my particular use) and the knowledge that I have gained about the boats, primarily from this HOW site. Without this community and access to archives, etc., my brand loyalty would not be so strong. Keep up the good work Phil. (Steve D. - if I can swing the 460, I'll make you deal on my 37.5. Just kidding!)

Why do you all feel the need to be so protective? I've been benefitting from this site (and Catalinaowners.com)for a couple years now just like everyone else. Phil's a big boy, and anyway, my criticism was professional not personal. By the way, MJ is my first name (short for "Michael John") and you know as much about me as you do anyone else.
