Does anyone know a good source for plastic covers for the older Standard Horizon round instruments? They used to be carried at West Marine, but they are not in the catalog anymore and I can't seem to find them on the web. As many people as still have these, there must be a convenient source. I'm specifically looking for covers for the Standard Communication 45 series speed, depth, and wind indicators. Thanks

fred, are you saying plastic lids will work??

Fred, are you saying that 5" plastic lids will work? Seems like the coffee can lids I can think of would either be too small or too large. the horizon series instruments are 5" across. Doesn't bother me what they look like, as I am thrifty (ok, cheap). Last time I bought some they were $9.00 each and last about 3 years... thanks

Another alternative

Leaving our boat in La Paz for 6 months each year, we always returned with new plastic instrument covers as the others would be split from the sun. Finally after 5 years, and new ones each year, we made Sunbrella covers for the instrument and its plastic cover. The Sunbrella is slightly larger than the round instrument, square, weighted at the botton with small fishing weights, and two snaps at the top to attach it to the boat. I didn't originally want to put snaps in, but relented finally. We have not replaced the plastic covers in three years as they are out of the sun protected by the Sunbrella while we are gone (hot summers, dodger taken down, lots of UV). Went ahead and made covers with two snaps for the port and starboard open compartments in the cockpit too. Sorry we don't have photos as we are back in the USA until next fall.

Extend the cover life with 303

I have been using 303 Aerospace UV protectant since last summer. I find that it not only gives anything fibreglass a high shine and long lasting protection, but also makes the plastic instrument covers look great and extends their flexibility and life. Tried in on my portlights - WOW!!!! Clear as glass. Check out their site. I'm sure glad I did. They will send you free samples to experiment with.

Jim, on that model, I don't know.

Back in the 'old days' a knot meter cover I owned was from a one pound coffee can. Worked great. All you can do is try. The price is right if you have coffee in the house or at work. But I would call Standard.

I bought some

Try: standardhorizon.com I bought some from them a couple of years ago - pricey, though, at 10 bucks a pop.

A friend advised that DMI sells plastic round covers as loss leaders and advertising for a buck apiece. That's after I bought some for list price. I haven't tried it, but if you don't mind Datamarine on your Standard units, it'd be a great deal. Also, try rubbing suntan lotion on anything you don't want to get UV'd. Works real well on bungee cords and extends their lives. Stu
