I am considering replacing the stock cabin lights. I would like to install a Nav Light (Red/White) in the head and over the Nav Station, and a White Hi/Lo lights in the aft cabin and over the galley. Is it really as simple at unscrewing the housing and removing the old light and wiring in the new light and screwing it into the cabin ceiling? Sound simple but . . .

It Is That Simple

Think about a couple of LED's too for low power drain. Of course, on a boat, almost anything can turn out to be more complicated, but this probably isn't one of those things. Rick D.

Estimate the time and increase to the next .....

Steve: Estimate the time required and then increase that to the next larger time increment. (i.e.: 1 hours = 1 day, 1 day = 1 week etc). Most of the time installing new lighting is not too difficult. One problem that I have encounted was installing florecent lights. They usually do not have enough room behind the fixture to accomodate the connectors, so this can become a problem. When I replaced the lights on my H'31 with similar units it really only took about 10-20 min. for each one. I usually test them with wire nuts and then use a crimp fitting once I know that they work.

Hi Steve, before you purchase all new fixtures...

do a google search on replacement LED bulbs. That is unless you just dislike your current fixtures. I have not replaced any of my fixtures (1991 vintage) but have done some research into replacement bulbs. Terry

Alpenglo for your white hi/lo

I just replaced the fixture over our cabin table with an Alpenglo flourescent. What a nice light! for sitting around with friends or eating dinner it is the best. Very nice, warm light. Low power consumption too. I put off getting one for quite a while due to cost, but they are worth the money.

Replaced all of our recessed lights with AlpenGlow

Ruedi: We also replaced ALL of our recessed floresent lights with AlpenGlow units. Bob made these custom for our boat. We removed one of the units are shipped it off to him. He duplicated the substraight and it only required a couple of holes than needed to drilled. I tried it out and they worked great. We then had him make replacements with white florescent and red LED's. I must tell you that we gained about 40-60% more light than we had with the stock ones that came with the boat. All of our light have hi/low setting and some of them also have red LED's.

Go with LED's

I just replaced all my cabin lights with the Sensibulb LED's. They are actually brighter than the bulbs I took out and draw almost no power. In my boat I didn't have to do any modifications to the plugs just bent out the prongs and slipped the LED's in. Kinda pricey at about $30 apiece but hey like I said they draw no power.
