Sound proofing.....

Hello all

So I am sound proofing a small cabinet that houses a couple of pumps. I don't want to use an engine room material ($$) as I am not going to have the heat concerns, however am looking for a high quality material that will last. Nothing worse that the typical foam that starts to disintegrate....
Space has plenty of ventilation.... just want to deaden some of the noise (already dealt with vibration factor).

Thanks!

Greg

What type of pumps? The issue is often vibration transmitted through the mounts. The sound proofing strategy varies depending the nature of the noise.

Sound dampening, not sound proofing. No such thing as sound proofing unless you build a chamber within a chamber to prevent air movement. So, with that, we musicians who are home recording types use towels layered to help dampen sound via air movement. That is the best solution IMHO. Sound via vibration is a different animal and will require dampening mounts.

In this video, the concept of sound dampening is discussed. Note the difference between acoustic foam and regular towels.

As always, JMHO

Roxul rock wool insulation does a good job of sound dampening, you would need to encapsulate it though as it's like a sponge.

Very cool video. Not sure what the elaborate string thing was about but the video was still very excellent

Yes as I mentioned I addressed the vibration factor.... and yes came up with a number of products on amazon. Just looking for first hand experience as there are a ton of options....

Thanks all

See my post #10 above. This is what all Fiberglas insulations does...
Prevent Air Movement.
Jim...

PS: Stagnant Air is best insulation for heat and sound.
PSS: Board type barriers have entrapped stagnant air bubbles.

If you go the insulation route, Roxul rock wool is superior to fiberglass insulation for sound dampening and much better to work with.

Try Celotex if you can find it. I am not sure that it is still marketed under that or any other brand name. Used to be used for building sheathing, It was recommended to dampen midrange frequencies in some industrial applications.

For sound deading in my video studio, I used a product called Sonex.
